Premier League: How much late goals continue to cost Leeds

The most notable transformation came last month when FARC snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a thrilling seven-goal match at St. James’ Park.

Leeds were 3-2 ahead when the clock struck 90 minutes before Newcastle scored twice in extra time to win 4-3.

The first of these two goals was a 91st-minute penalty kick from Bruno Guimaraes – the fourth penalty kick Leeds have missed in extra time this season. Harvey Barnes then scored for Newcastle in the 102nd minute, the last ever goal in the Premier League.

Gabriel Gudmundsson scored a 94th-minute own goal during the visit of Fulham in September, gifting the Cottagers all three points, and the pattern raises questions about Leeds’ fitness and concentration in the closing stages.

“For me, it can only be a matter of concentration,” says Paul Robinson, the former Leeds and England goalkeeper. “I don’t think it’s about fitness, two or three minutes at the end of the game is neither here nor there for these players.

“There are different types of goals – penalty kicks, own goals, and other goals that are difficult to legislate. Any goal, if you break it down, you can spot a mistake or a loss of concentration somewhere along the chain. Maybe sometimes there is a lack of leadership in the last minutes.

“Leeds fans won’t care as long as they stay up, but at the moment they are drawing a lot of games and are right in the mix.”
