But Premier League fans aren’t paying the highest prices of all – Paris Saint-Germain (£121), Barcelona (£101) and Real Madrid (£94) are all more expensive for fans per match on average.

Other clubs in their respective leagues charge much lower prices, meaning the average fan in La Liga or La Liga pays much less.

In some ways, Premier League clubs’ expenses have increased significantly.

Between them, the 20 Premier League clubs have more than 11,000 full-time staff, an increase of 8% on the previous year, thanks largely to expansions in the top clubs’ commercial teams.

Operating costs – including things like utilities, transport, insurance, marketing and administration – rose 11% to a total of £1.77bn.

Total wages paid to footballers were £3.1bn across the division in 2025, which was neither an increase nor a decrease.

“We can say that costs are increasing and football clubs are not immune to this, but the vast majority of their spending is still directed at player wages and transfer fees,” says Dan Plumley, senior lecturer in sports finance at Sheffield Hallam University.

“Clubs are constantly seeking to reduce revenues, not to make a profit, but to increase their team costs as much as possible.

“This is where clubs run the risk of alienating fanbases because too many fans will see it for what it is.

“Clubs enjoy unwavering loyalty from their customers, which you don’t find in any other industry, and there is the potential for exploitation that comes with that.”
