King’s opener came after a sustained period of pressure from Wire with Hopoate thriving from an errant goal-line leak, with George Williams continuing to provide the offload for King to control the line.

If that was good, their second attempt was even better – after picking up the ball deep in their own half, Taylor Wray sprinted from 70 meters out and beat Saints full-back Welsby to the line.

Taylor Wray was in the mix again as he showed incredible speed to weave his way through the St Helens backline as the wire continued to pass Hopoate to score in the corner.

Saints thought they had answered when Welsby went over, but under new rules introduced this season, the try was reviewed by video referee Chris Kendall after the fact despite being served on the pitch.

However, upon watching the try again, Kendall ruled it out after ruling that David Klemmer had obstructed Kelepi Tanginoa in the build-up and Saints had another try disallowed shortly after following Alex Walmsley’s double move.

Saints kept up the pressure and were rewarded when Welsby tricked Liam Byrne into a run, but when he extended his right arm while grounding, he suffered what appeared to be a painful shoulder injury which ruled him out for the final 20 minutes.

Jackson Hastings missed the extras but made up for it soon after when he curled a precise kick towards Sailor who passed the ball under the posts with ease.

But Hastings’ night got worse soon after when the former Man of Steel and St Helens player was sent to the bin for a tackle on Taylor-Wray shortly after he had offloaded Thewlis to score Warrington’s fourth try of the evening.
