Premier League: Which team has received the most red cards in a season?

Sunderland Queens Park Rangers hold the joint record for the most red cards in a Premier League season with nine each.

The Blackcats became the first team to receive nine red cards in a single season during the 2009-10 season, before QPR repeated the feat two years later.

Chelsea have received seven red cards in 28 matches in the 2025-26 season, with winger Pedro Neto the latest to receive a red card in a 2-1 defeat to league leaders Arsenal.

Robert Sanchez, Malu Giusto, Trevo Chalupa, Moises Caicedo, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella have all been ordered off by referees this season as well.

The Blues see red on average once every four games, and if this run continues they could match or break the current record.

This season the average of red cards stands at 9.5, roughly down to 10, over a 38-game season – which would set a new Premier League record.

Former coach Enzo Maresca was also sent off late during Chelsea’s win over Liverpool in October.

Chelsea’s poor discipline also led to the Blues breaking the club record for red cards in a single Premier League season.
