As the quarter-hour mark passed, it looked as if the first Premier League meeting between these two teams would be very one-sided.
Stone, Thewlis and the impressive Kai Taylor and Ray gave the visitors the perfect start with three quick goals, with Wolves twice breaking down the home side’s defense either side of Taylor and Ray collecting a brilliant pass to go beyond the corner.
Fifteen minutes later, Warrington found themselves incredibly behind after a strong comeback from the home side.
Ben Jones-Bishop got the Knights on the board, before Denive Balmforth followed up on smart hands from full-back Tom Mata’afa, who scored his try moments later to complete the conversion.
The lead changed again minutes later, and Stone scored his second try to send Wolves 22-18 into the break.
The second half mirrored the first, with the home side emerging from the traps slower than their more experienced Premier League rivals. George Williams crossed to score before Currie made his century effort for Warrington from under the posts.
The hosts still refused to accept defeat, with Paul Vaughan claiming, against his former side, William Harris, that he was trying to move the Knights within two points of their opponents.
Thewlis came back again with 10 minutes remaining, and Mark Snead converted the extras as Wolves sealed the win.
They return to action at Goole Vikings in the Challenge Cup on Saturday, March 14, while York take on Keighley Cougars in the same competition.
