Previous lockdowns ended in a settlement. Why is this one different?

The government has not been shut down this long. There is no indication that it will reopen anytime soon.

As of Wednesday, the shutdown that began Oct. 1 has reached its 36th day, making it the longest of any shutdown in the United States. The previous record holder was the shutdown in 2018, which lasted 35 days.

Lawmakers are discussing reaching a compromise on the impasse, which stems from funding cuts to the Affordable Care Act. Previous closures ended in settlement

Although the two longest lockdowns in America occurred during the era of President Donald Trump, the reasons behind them are different. However, similar pressures may be what puts an end to both.

In 2018, Trump wanted $5.7 billion in funding to build a border wall with Mexico, which Democrats opposed. More than 35 days after the shutdown began, Trump signed legislation that included $1.3 billion for border security, although none of it could be used to build “structures” along the border.

Part of the impetus to resolve the lockdown came from public reaction to the loss of government services, especially regarding air travel. Absences among TSA staff and air traffic controllers led to long delays for passengers.

There are some of the same problems brewing in the current lockdown, as reports indicate that more unpaid air traffic controllers are calling in sick, helping to further strain the country’s air travel system.

Budget battles are usually at the heart of government shutdowns, and the next longer shutdown, which ended in January 1996, came as a result of a dispute between then-President Bill Clinton and the Republican majority in the House of Representatives over how to balance the budget.
