💡 **What You’ll Learn**:

Think protein Bars are quick snacks, not meal replacements. They are very useful when whole foods are not available or when your schedule does not allow for a proper meal. The most beneficial sources of protein come with fiber, healthy fats, and other nutrients. (This is why registered dietitians recommend whole foods rather than ultra-processed alternatives.) So, while high-protein snacks may have impressive numbers on the label, they’re not always the healthiest option.

After consulting nutrition experts on the key ingredients to look for (and what to avoid), we’ve rounded up the best protein bars that meet these criteria. For more tips on protein, check out our guide to the best protein powders and How Much Protein Do I Need?

What should I look for in a protein bar?

Start with the nutritional facts label. The first thing to check is the serving size, as every number on the label applies to that portion. For most protein bars, one bar equals one serving, but it’s still worth emphasizing.

Scan calories

What is “right” depends on your calorie needs. If it’s a snack between meals, a range of about 200 calories generally makes sense. If you’re trying to gain weight or looking for a meal replacement, you may need something closer to 350 calories. However, experts do not recommend protein bars as a meal replacement. They are best used to supplement whole foods, which provide a wide range of nutrients that snack bars cannot imitate.

Verify protein content and source

“Ideally, we would like to see protein bars offer between 10 and 20 grams of protein,” says Jamie Mock, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Quantity is just as important; Protein derived from milk, soy, peas, or nuts are all popular and effective options.

Don’t forget the fiber

Fiber helps stabilize blood sugar, supports digestion, curbs cravings, and keeps you full longer. According to Mock, about 5 grams of fiber per energy bar is a good standard, preferably from whole food ingredients, such as nuts, seeds or oats.

Ingredients to avoid

In general, the shorter and more recognizable the ingredient list, the better. High protein bars can be as delicious as Snickers. “They can also discreetly pack in a lot of added sugar, turning it into a candy bar,” says Mock. There’s no official limit, but about 5 grams of added sugar or less is a reasonable standard. Check the nutritional label and ingredient list: Drinks and concentrates are usually indicators of added sugars.

Many brands reduce their sugar by using sugar alcohols (such as erythritol, maltitol, or sorbitol). These foods provide fewer calories than sugar and do not increase blood glucose in the same way, but they can cause bloating, gas, or digestive discomfort for some people, especially at higher doses. If you notice stomach problems after eating protein bars, sugar alcohols are likely to blame. You may tolerate one piece well, but eating several a day can be uncomfortable.

It’s also helpful to limit bars that rely heavily on hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, which are more processed forms of fat, as well as those filled with long lists of artificial sweeteners (like sucralose), colors, or flavors.

RxBar offers now A couple of different protein bars, but the Classic 12G is still the best. Made with whole foods, the base is a blend of egg whites—a complete protein—dates for sweetness and binding, and nuts (pecans, hazelnuts, cashews, walnuts, peanuts, and almonds). I taste-tested the chocolate sea salt, but RxBar also sells blueberry, peanut butter, chocolate peanut butter, vanilla, almond, chocolate coconut, and strawberry. It has a very chewy, gooey texture, so if that’s not your taste, there are a variety of nut and oat butters that replace the dates with the rolled oats.

David

Variety Pack Protein Bar 6 Pack

David protein bars are named after Michelangelo’s David, with the implied promise that this bar will give you a similar physique. This particular bar has been so hyped that it’s hard not to feel like the company must be a joke. David even sells pocketable cod fillets on his site. I bought a peanut butter chocolate bar. Although I will eat almost anything peanut butter flavored, these peanut butter chocolate bars are actually good! I find the chewy texture appealing, with the chocolate chunks and rice crisps crunching through them shocking in their similarity, as they also contain no added sugars. In fact, it tastes mostly like PowerBar Peanut Butter, but with an additional interesting mix and incredible specifications. —Adrian Su

Assorted packages of snacks in rectangular containers

As I mentioned before, my kids and I will eat almost anything that contains peanut butter or is made with peanut butter, and that’s basically what the Perfect Bar is. You have to store it in the refrigerator, which makes it a little less convenient than some of our other picks. They also contain more than twice as many calories as some of our other picks, if that’s important to you. However, I’m addicted to these things and buy them from Costco monthly. It tastes like a palm-sized piece of peanut butter and honey. As a testament to its flavor, my 8-year-old and 10-year-old often take it out of the container if they don’t feel like cutting into an apple. —Adrian Su

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to eat a protein bar?

It depends on your lifestyle. If you treat a protein bar as a snack, it makes more sense between meals, especially if you need something to fill a long gap or prevent a blood sugar crash.

Protein bars are also great after a workout. Of course, a full meal containing protein and carbohydrates is ideal for recovery, but a protein bar can be a temporary solution when you’re on the go and can’t sit down to eat right away.
