Rangers coach update: Danny Ruhl named head coach

Title-winning coach Gerrard withdrew from consideration last weekend, saying the timing was not right for him to return to Ibrox.

Ruhl then also pulled out, prompting Rangers to hold advanced talks with Australian Muscat – but a potential late start to his tenure has made a deal unviable for both parties.

Ruhl, who left Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent in the summer, twice avoided relegation with the beleaguered South Yorkshire club.

He finished 12th in the championship during his full season, an impressive feat considering Wednesday’s financial difficulties.

Former Southampton coach Martin was sacked, leaving Rangers in eighth place in the league, nine points behind champions Celtic and two more points behind leaders Heart of Midlothian.

They are now eight points behind the hard-working Celtic and 13 points behind Derek McInnes’ side.

Rangers also failed to qualify for the Champions League under Martin and lost both of their Europa League matches.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh acknowledged the club’s recent testing period, during which the club was criticized by fans for a protracted search for a new manager, but he believes Ruhl can “restore pride and ultimately success”.

“Danny’s experience at elite level, in high-pressure environments, makes him a perfect fit for what we expect here,” Cavenagh said.

“We know the last few months have been challenging, but our focus has always been on finding the right person, who is ready to immediately embrace this football club and the demands that come with it.

“Danny has impressed us with his vision, character and understanding of what Rangers stands for. We believe he can help restore pride, momentum and ultimately success.”
