He admitted that “15 years ago, this would have been a red card”, but noted that the incident would have been viewed as “violent behaviour” rather than a “serious offence” under current rules.

“The goalkeeper has possession of the ball on contact, so we don’t see this as a challenge for the ball,” Cullum explained.

Walsh and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team had to decide “whether excessive force was used”.

“The referee came to the conclusion that there was not enough force, there was no brutality for him and the contact was negligible,” Collum said.

He said this was clear from the recording of on-field communication between Walsh and the VAR team.

“You hear him straight away say a reckless yellow card and then he goes into a long conversation with the Rangers captain, but at that point he also communicates with the VAR and talks about the level of intensity,” Collum added.

“He also talked about buttons and, for him, there’s no use for buttons here. VAR looks at the pictures and they don’t see anything that tells them anything other than that.”
