But UEFA said in a statement: “These rules ensure that any cross-border competitions are evaluated according to objective, transparent, non-discriminatory and proportionate criteria.”

This development comes after the European Parliament this month adopted a landmark resolution explicitly reiterating its opposition to “breakaway competitions” because they “threaten the sports ecosystem in general.”

He added: “UEFA will carefully review the ruling before deciding on any further steps, and will not make further comments at this stage.”

UEFA added that it will continue to “preserve the unity of European football” and is “firmly committed to the European sporting model built on sporting merit, open access, solidarity and the protection of the football pyramid.”

La Liga said it respected the regional court’s ruling, but reiterated its “firm commitment” to the “integrity and stability of national competitions” and “respect for European Union competition rules.”

Its president Javier Tebas added: “This ruling in no way represents an endorsement of the Premier League or any other. It only confirms that the regulations must be applied transparently and objectively.”

The European Premier League saga began in April 2021 when news emerged that 12 clubs – including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham – were entering the separate competition.

There was widespread anger and condemnation from fans, other European leagues and even the government, leading to the plans collapsing within 72 hours.

UEFA imposed fines on Premier League clubs as well as Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan, but measures against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus were halted during the legal proceedings, although Juventus indicated its intention to withdraw from the project in July.
