Real Madrid beats Benfica “for everyone who opposes racism”

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Chouamini said that Real Madrid’s victory over Benfica of Portugal and qualification to the round of 16 of the Champions League was “a victory for everyone who stands against racism.”

Vinicius Junior claimed that he was subjected to racist abuse by Benfica’s Gianluca Pristiani during the first leg, in which the Real Madrid striker scored the only goal of the match.

Pristiani – who denied racially abusing the Brazilian player – was handed a one-match ban, meaning he missed Wednesday’s second leg.

A show of support for Vinicius was shown by the home fans as a banner reading “No to racism” in Spanish was displayed in the stands before kick-off.

Vinicius was back on the scoresheet again, scoring Real Madrid’s second goal as the Spanish side came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 and book their place in the next round with a 3-1 aggregate win.

“I think there are more important things than this match, than football,” said Tchouamini, who scored the equalizer for Real in the first half.

“Vinicius keeps his confidence and stays focused on what he has to do.

“I think they made the right decision not to allow the boy [Prestianni] Play this match.

“As I said, there are more important things than football, and this is a victory for all of us.”

Real Madrid and England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold said Vinicius was himself before the match, “very chill” and “very relaxed”.

“He didn’t need to score to send a message or show his mentality,” the former Liverpool player said.

“He doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone because he has shown time and time again how competent he is.

“He steps up when we need him most. He knows his quality and what he brings to the team.”
