Sports physiotherapist Ben Warbuton explained that these masks are traditionally used in controlled environments, such as a treadmill or exercise bike, to assess fitness levels. However, Real Madrid have adapted the technology so that it can be used during regular training sessions.

“They’ve been given high-tech equipment to complete that during training,” Warbuton said. “This benefits coaches because they can test players and coach at the same time.”

He added that traditional VO2 max testing may be impractical during the season. “If all the players tested on the treadmill or bike, it would take a very long time. They would lose a training session, and the treadmill is a harder and different surface to grass,” he explained.

By incorporating masks into soccer training, Warbuton says there is also a reduced risk of infection.

“By wearing these masks while training, there is a slight reduction in the risk of soft tissue injuries, such as a pulled calf muscle. They do not waste a session and gain valuable fitness information.”

The collected data allows staff to evaluate each player’s condition and design workloads accordingly.

Warbuton added: “The results will tell the coaches how fit the players are.” “They will compare them to their own baselines, or to other players in the same position. Players with lower VO2 max may need more fitness and conditioning.

“It’s just one way of looking at a player’s conditioning levels. I imagine it’s very expensive, which is why not all clubs are adopting it.”
