Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model
There’s now a secondary industry revolving around the huge, morally questionable shows from the post-millennial reality TV gold rush era. Following last year’s Netflix unveiling of the obesity-shaming behemoth The Biggest Loser, comes this series that explores the rollercoaster story of America’s Next Top Model. It’s a depressing look at the values of the era, tracing the trajectory of a show that began as a source of Black and LGBTQ+ empowerment but lost its moral bearings. Several former contestants contribute (Shandi Sullivan’s story is particularly bizarre) as does creator Tyra Banks, who seems oddly shy and accusatory. “You guys were asking for this,” she claims. “So we kept pushing.”

Being Gordon Ramsay
This six-part film follows Gordon Ramsay as he attempts to open several floors of the foodie paradise at the top of 22 Bishopsgate in London. “This thing is going to take balls of steel,” Ramsay says. In his professional life, he is the very opposite of self-effacing – but a slightly less abrasive Ramsay emerges through glimpses of his family life and autobiographical snippets in which he recalls his upbringing on council estates. He also describes intensive apprenticeships in the kitchen or swimming under the supervision of Marco Pierre White. It’s a feast of expletives and theatrical menace, none of which will change anyone’s opinions about the chef.
Netflix starting Wednesday February 18
Girl on the Run: The Search for America’s Most Wanted Woman
This true crime documentary tells the incredible story of Sarah Jo Binder who was sent to prison in 2002 after being convicted of murder. The case was very mysterious in the first place, as it involved a violent boyfriend, drug deals and an illegally purchased firearm. But in 2008, Bender escaped from a maximum security prison after conspiring with a guard and another prisoner. This film mainly focuses on the attempts to arrest her – she was at large for four months. A grim gripping issue.
Netflix starting Thursday February 19
Night agent
This clever but explosive spy drama has quietly evolved into one of Netflix’s simple but consistent success stories. It stars Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland, a special agent who works under deep cover as a last resort to solve security problems that require a combination of extreme discretion and lethal force. In this third season, he works (reluctantly) with journalist Isabel Genesis Rodriguez, who is investigating a dark money network. But as their path begins to ascend, they begin to uncover some very dangerous secrets.
Netflix starting Thursday February 19
Sector law
An adult animated comedy about lawyers sounds like a tough sell. But this series about an uptight lawyer who moves to Las Vegas and soon finds he’s too boring to pass a crowd in Sin City, has just the right ratio of smarmy and stupid. Lincoln Jump is very much a shirt-and-tie guy. But soon he’s taking on cases involving stunt artists and general freaks – and joining forces with local magician Sheila Flamby, who’s been recruited to give Gumb Legal a touch of much-needed excitement. The impressive voice cast includes Adam Scott and Janelle James.
Netflix starting Friday February 20
I’m watching you
A brilliant, melodramatic slice of technophobia in this Australian thriller loosely inspired by JP Bomar’s novel The Last Guests. Despite her engagement, Lena (Aisha Dee) enjoys a one-night stand while staying at a friend’s rented apartment. However, when she returns (in a hilariously contrived twist, she manages to misplace her engagement ring) Lena discovers that the apartment is full of hidden cameras. Then follows a series of betrayals as Lena tries to track down her eavesdropping tormentors. It’s paranoia in numbers, but Dee is a convincing leader.
Disney+ starting Friday February 20
The last thing he said to me
A somewhat surprising second season to this bright but icy thriller stars Jennifer Garner as Hannah Hall, a woman tasked with protecting her difficult teenage daughter Billie after her partner (Billie’s father) Owen is forced to run away. As we return, Owen is still not safe – the ruthless Campano crime family is on his trail. However, in defiance of all logic, Hanna has a plan – and it involves taking on this powerful and dangerous mob, almost alone. No matter how seriously he takes it, none of it really sinks in.
Apple TV, starting Friday, February 20
