Report: Apple now makes one in four iPhones in India

Bloomberg reports that Apple is now manufacturing 25% of its iPhones in India — a major milestone expected by JPMorgan in 2022 — as part of its long-term plan to reduce its dependence on China.

Last year, India acquired 55 million iPhones out of approximately 220 to 230 million products worldwide, the Bloomberg report said. Apple has also moved quickly to deepen that commitment: It began manufacturing its entire iPhone 17 lineup in India ahead of its launch last September, and Apple CEO Tim Cook said the majority of US demand is now being met by made-in-India iPhones.

This shift accelerated in 2025, as Apple faced uncertainty in China due to ever-changing US tariff rules, prompting it to diversify production across multiple countries. The risks were high enough that President Donald Trump personally warned Cook against expanding further into India during a business summit in Doha in May.

India has also become an important consumer market for Apple. The company shipped 14 million units there last year, up 9% year over year, according to analytics firm Counterpoint. Separately, Bloomberg noted that total iPhone sales in the country exceeded $9 billion last year. Apple is reportedly in talks to launch Apple Pay in India this year and opened its sixth Indian store last month.
