Riley Gaines previously thought about four trans athletes representing the Minnesota women’s hockey team. The 25-year-old swimmer turned social activist shared her thoughts on her X account, writing:

“4 Men on a women’s hockey team in Minnesota. This is what they call progress.”

Riley Gaines had previously had a hit on a trans player playing for a high school softball team in Minnesota around June 2025. This led to an online feud between Gaines and gymnastics sensation Simone Biles, who accused her of harassing people from the transgender community. Biles wrote in her post

“You’re really sick, all this campaigning because you lost a race. Sore loser. You should be uplifting the trans community and maybe finding a way to make sports inclusive or creating a new way for trans people to feel safe in sports. Maybe the trans category in all sports. But instead… you’re bullying them. The only thing for sure is that no one in sports is safe with you.”

Simone Biles also suggested to Riley Gaines that he should bully “someone your size.” However, the jibe did not go down well with many social media users, including celebrities such as news anchor Piers Morgan and tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who criticized Biles for her alleged double standards.
