Other governments have noted the privacy implications of wearable devices such as Meta Glasses, raising concerns about more advanced capabilities they may have in the near future. “Given their massive metadata sets, smart glasses could capture images of thousands of people without their knowledge or consent and then instantly associate those faces with names, workplaces, or profiles, creating serious risks of targeted stalking, harassment, and intimidation,” the lawmakers wrote. They noted “how easily real-time identification technologies can be repurposed to discourage political expression, target vulnerable communities, and mollify legitimate opposition.” The trio asked Meta to detail its practices around biometric data and explain how it could hope to obtain “explicit affirmative consent” from every bystander whose face is captured through a user’s glasses.

Meanwhile, communities are organizing to protect themselves from harassment by pick-up artists using meta glasses. Earlier this month, a Redditor posted on a forum for residents of Vancouver, British Columbia, that a man was frequenting the downtown nightclub area at night to record, via smart glasses, his techniques for chatting with women. “In many of his videos, women feel very uncomfortable and clearly reject his advances and say no,” the editor wrote. The videos appear on the man’s Instagram account, @vibrophone, who has about 12,000 followers, knows him by the first name Sharif, and advertises him as “Riz” coach. Other videos show him “twisting” the women he encounters, lifting them horizontally to his chest like weights. (The account owner did not respond to a request for comment.)

In several Reddit threads, Vancouver locals expressed frustration that Sharif might be monetizing his content, though it’s not clear whether or not he is doing so. One goal of these channels appears to be to attract opportunities to cross-promote brands: for example, Kagazi has a link on his profile to the AI ​​“dating assistant” app, while John displays a promo code for the nicotine product Nic Nac.

One woman, who spoke with WIRED on the condition of anonymity so as not to obtain her personal information, says Sharif approached her near an arts and entertainment center last fall.

After he stopped, he asked her: Who released the dogs? He repeated the question when she expressed confusion. “And when I stopped, he made that little hand gesture that people make to mean ‘keep going,’ and he said, ‘Who, who, who?’” she says. “She laughed a little and kept walking. I’m a millennial, so obviously I know that song, but the interaction was so corny, I just kind of knew it. I remember noticing he was wearing those camera glasses and thinking, “Oh, maybe he just filmed that.”

I later saw recent Reddit posts about him. Although he has not uploaded a video of her, she is nonetheless disturbed by other Meta Ray-Ban clips. “They seem to be predators,” she says. “I don’t expect privacy when I’m in public. But if a person approaches strangers with a hidden camera and interacts with them without revealing that he or she is filming, that’s a problem.”
