Sources close to the situation say Edwards was prepared to complete all the duties from which he was removed, with Middlesbrough making decisions regarding Friday’s training session, press conference and Saturday’s match.

Middlesbrough are believed to have been angered by Wolves’ approach and Edwards’ openness to taking over the job.

It is understood that Edwards views the Wolves job as his dream role, having made more than 100 appearances for the Molineux side between 2004 and 2008.

He grew up in nearby Telford and still has family in the area, although the logistics of any move to Wolves are not said to be a major factor.

Former Coventry and Aston Villa striker Dion Dublin says Middlesbrough fans should not be surprised by Edwards being pushed to leave so soon after joining.

“This happens in football all the time. We talk about loyalty, what loyalty? [You will move] “If a job comes up it will suit you as an individual, financially and for your family,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He supports himself as a coach. I know Rob well. Middlesbrough are in a much better position than Wolves, that balance is better at the moment, but this attraction [from Wolves] Because Rob is too much.”
