Reflecting on his successful year, McIlroy remembers with particular affection the reception he received at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in July, where he finished tied for seventh.

“I will never forget the reception I got at Portrush this year, even though I didn’t win the Open,” he said.

“The support I get from my home country is absolutely incredible, so I would like to thank everyone in Northern Ireland for supporting me, believing in me and being with me on this journey.

“It’s as if everyone has watched me grow up, and witnessed the highs and lows with me.”

McIlroy added: “Home is home, it always will be, it’s the place that made me. I come home and it’s always the place I feel most comfortable.”

“I don’t come home as much as I’d like, but I feel like I carry Northern Ireland with me wherever I go, but when I go home, I feel a sense of belonging that I don’t get anywhere else.”

The judging panel consisted of All-Ireland Senior Football Championship winner Oisin McConville, four-time Paralympic champion Michael MacKillop, Northern Ireland women’s football record holder Julie Nelson, Irish hockey record holder Shirley MacKay, BBC Sport NI Executive Editor Neil Brittain and BBC Sport NI correspondent Thomas Kean.
