Rory McIlroy continued his quest to secure his seventh Race to Dubai title after a strong second round in the DP World Tour Championship.
The Northern Irishman carded a three-under 69 to sit in a five-player tie for second place – alongside the likes of Ireland’s Shane Lowry and England’s Justin Rose – on nine under par.
The chasing pack is three strokes behind Denmark’s Nicolai Hougaard, who fired 65 on day two in the UAE.
“I had to fight a little bit more today,” said McIlroy, who mixed six birdies and three bogeys in a second-round showing.
“I felt like I showed off my scoring skills and stayed patient, getting the ball up and down when I needed to.
“All in all, for shooting 69, I’m very happy looking at some of the locations I found myself.”
The 36-year-old has 767 points at the top of the world rankings to achieve his fourth consecutive title in the Dubai race.
England duo Tyrrell Hatton and Marco Bing are the only ones who can stop McIlroy from winning the season-long competition, formerly known as the European Tour Order of Merit, but they are joint 11th and 44th respectively.
McIlroy’s fellow Ryder Cup winner, Tommy Fleetwood, is one of four players at eight under and ended an impressive run of 68 consecutive holes without a bogey when he dropped a putt on the 12th hole.
He is joined in a tie for seventh alongside Robert McIntyre, Alex Noren and Lauri Kanter, while Tyrell Hatton is one shot away.
