📌 Key idea:
McIlroy’s Masters win came 14 years after he started on his way to victory at Augusta National, having led by four shots after three rounds in 2011 before falling away.
But he held his nerve this year to earn his first green jacket in a playoff game after a late hit from Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose.
McIlroy joined the elite club by winning the Masters – where only Gene Sarazin, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have completed a career.
He also claimed a seventh Race to Dubai title in 2025 – and fourth in a row – and is now one shy of Colin Montgomerie’s record of eight European Tour titles.
Asked if he was targeting the Scot’s record in 2026, McIlroy said: “I’d like to try that. I still feel like I’ve got a few good years in my life. Knock on wood I’ve been injury-free.”
“I’ve been on tour for half my life – 18 years – but I still get passionate about the game.
“Major championships, more Ryder Cups, all that’s great but like Tommy [Fleetwood] “As long as you feel like you still have that drive to keep getting better, that’s the most important thing.”
McIlroy was named Sports Personality of the Year 2025 at a ceremony in Salford on Thursday.
He was joined by McIlroy’s close friend Tommy Fleetwood to collect the Team of the Year award, which was given to Europe for their success in the Ryder Cup.
