Rule Breakers Review – An Exciting True Life Story of an Afghan Girls Robotics Team | film

forBased on a true story, Bill Guttentag’s riveting drama bears witness to the resilience of women who dare to dream despite strict social constraints. The film follows Roya Mahboob (Nicole Bushiri), a pioneering STEM coach and entrepreneur, who assembles a robotics team of Afghan girls to participate in international competitions. The young dreamers come from different walks of life but all share the same enthusiasm for engineering. They also face the same risks; In a country where women are not encouraged or even allowed to pursue higher levels of education, their quest for medals faces opposition from their families as well as general scorn from conservatives.

Rule Breakers is at its most exciting during the competition sequences, combining realistic documentary footage of events with fictional re-enactments. (There’s also an appearance from Phoebe Waller-Bridge as host.) Excitement flows throughout the film, as the camera pans around the young competitors, energized by their love of science. These spaces are portrayed as havens that encourage camaraderie rather than competitiveness, and in a world divided by military conflicts and wars, they offer a utopian vision of international cooperation and solidarity.

When it comes to the darker sides of the story, Rule Breakers is less assured. With the exception of simple scenes depicting girls being refused visas to the United States, the film rarely addresses the war in Afghanistan and its effects on women. From foreign funding to press coverage, the film establishes a dichotomy between Western support and domestic repression, but this distinction requires more political precision given the legacy of American intervention in the region. Although the journey taken by this extraordinary robotics team is exhilarating, it deserves a layered narrative style more than a feel-good movie.
