Ryder Cup: Luke Donald’s ‘fantastic’ return to Europe – Rory McIlroy

McIlroy, who lives on the same street as Donald, said he had spoken to the former world number one about staying for a third term in “quite a few conversations before the new year”.

After the announcement, Donald told BBC Sport that he wanted to take some time out after the recent Ryder Cup to enjoy the victory, which came against a dramatic backdrop due to the highly charged atmosphere in New York.

“It’s a big part of your life,” McIlroy said, so he understood why Donald wanted to take his time committing to 2027.

“It’s a long-term commitment. He’s put a lot of effort into this, but he put his golf career on hold for six years to do it,” the Northern Ireland player said.

“He has to feel that everything that’s happening is right, Diane [Donald’s wife] It should be in it. “The kids have to be involved and it’s much more than just his decision at the end of the day.”

McIlroy said he was determined to play a major role at Adare Manor, the first time the Ryder Cup has been played on the island of Ireland.

“Ultimately, we all see a chance for him to become the greatest Ryder Cup captain ever if we can go and win in Ireland.

“I’m excited for him and the opportunity he has.

“I just want to be a part of this team to help them try to make this history.”
