SA20 results: Sunrisers Eastern Cape beat Pretoria Capitals to clinch third title despite Dewald Preves century

Sunrisers Eastern Cape clinched their third SA20 title with a six-wicket win over Pretoria Capitals despite a stunning century for runners-up Dewald Previs.

After being put in to bat, the Capitals scored 158-7, thanks to South Africa’s Braves smashing 101 off 56 balls, including seven sixes.

However, only Bryce Parsons (30 off 30) and Shirvan Rutherford (17 off 11) hit at least double figures for Pretoria, with South African left-arm fast bowler Marco Janssen taking 3-10.

The lack of support for the 22-year-old Breves proved costly, as unbeaten half-centuries from Matthew Bretzke and Tristan Stubbs saw the Sunrisers go past their target of 159 by four balls at Newlands.

Sunrisers have now won three of the four SA20 tournaments, losing in last year’s final at the hands of MI Cape Town.

They did not look likely to get the win after they trailed to 48-4 in the ninth over, with opener Jonny Bairstow dismissed for a golden duck in the first half by Lungi Ngidi.

However, South Africa internationals Bretzke and Stubbs put on a brilliant sustained stand of 114 off 65 balls for the fifth wicket.

Sunrisers needed 42 off the last three overs and hit 21 off the 18th over, bowled by Gideon Peters, and 12 off the penultimate over, bowled by Ngidi.

With nine men needed to see out the final, Stubbs sealed victory in emphatic style by scoring two successive goals against Parsons.

Bretzky finished unbeaten with a score of 68 from 49 and Stubbs 62 not out from 41.
