Two sailors have been taken to hospital after a “catastrophic” collision between New Zealand and French boats on the opening day of the New Zealand Sailing Grand Prix in Auckland.
The race was abandoned after the incident, and SailGP said the injured sailors – one from each team – were in a stable condition in hospital.
The collision occurred at the start of race three when, according to SailGP,, external The New Zealanders “lost control and swerved sharply in front of the French boat.”
The third and fourth races were cancelled, while New Zealand and France will not be able to participate in Sunday’s race due to the damage they sustained.
French driver Quentin Delapierre said, “Everything happened very quickly. It is still very cloudy in my mind and I did not review the footage or talk to the referees.”
“I think both teams are fine. I want to give my thoughts to Team New Zealand as well as my teammates – it’s been tough for everyone on both teams. I think we’ll find some solutions to make sure we don’t see this kind of thing happen again.”
New Zealand were also involved in an accident in the season-opening event in Perth last month when they collided with Switzerland.
The Black Foils moved into pole position after winning the second race in Auckland, but fell off the leaderboard as they were handed an eight-point penalty for the collision with France.
Defending SailGP champion Team Great Britain, which won the opening race of the season in January, finished 11th in the first race before finishing second in the second race.
The organizers rescheduled the start of the race on Sunday to an earlier time due to bad weather conditions expected later.
