Millwall recorded an impressive 2-0 win away to fellow promotion contenders Wrexham on Saturday to create a gap between them and the chasing pack. Five points behind the leaders, can we consider them automatic promotion contenders?
Parkin: “I would say that’s probably an exaggeration, as we sit here today. They have a great chance of being a Premier League team next season, but I think it’s likely to be the case through the play-offs.”
“This is the most complete Millwall team I can think of in recent memory. You have the experience [Jake] Cooper and Billy Mitchell, who have been there for a long time, but now there is more control and quality across a variety of positions.
“[Caleb] Taylor and Barry Bannan have joined. Femi Azeez is one of the best strikers in the division currently, and the signings they made at the end of the window – I know [Anthony] Patterson did not play today, but it could be argued that he and Brighton’s Tommy Watson will feature in most of the teams in the tournament.
“It tells you how far Millwall have come. There is a lot of joint thinking, a real plan behind the scenes for Millwall to become, realistically, a Premier League team. They had to add more quality, more control and guile in the midfield – they did that.
“The way they have achieved success is by being very difficult to play against on the pitch, being physical on set-pieces, they can still do all that, but there are so many aspects to their game.
“It was the special result of the day, because it gave them a six-point lead over Wrexham and Preston. They are in a good position, and they have a real chance of achieving something special.”
