Former Cameroonian star Samuel Eto’o has been handed a four-match ban and a $20,000 (£14,960) fine after being found guilty of misconduct by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary committee.

A CAF statement said that Eto’o, who currently heads his country’s football federation, violated the principles of sportsmanship during the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final match between Cameroon and Morocco.

The former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker was reportedly seen making an angry gesture over some decisions made by officials as the Indomitable Lions lost 2-0 to the tournament hosts.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who was also present at the stadium in Rabat, seemed to witness the frustration felt by Eto’o.

The Continental Union announced on Monday that it would launch an investigation into “the violent confrontations and unacceptable behavior of some players and officials” during the last eight matches.

In response, Vikavot rejected CAF’s decision, describing the process as “raising serious reservations about the basic requirements of a fair trial.”

Vikavot subsequently expressed his support for his boss in a statement on Wednesday, while indicating that Eto’o would appeal the punishment.

Since taking office in 2021, Eto’o’s image as a legend in the game has been affected by controversy and scandal.

He has faced accusations of inappropriate behavior and mismanagement, and some football shareholders have also complained of serious irregularities within Fecafoot.

He often rejected such allegations, touting his achievements at the head of the organization.
