“For us, this is a historic moment,” Milan club president Paolo Scaroni said. “It has taken us five or six years to get to this point, and we have had great support from our owners RedBird.

“UEFA have ruled out San Siro as a stadium for Euro 2032 – it simply does not have all the facilities necessary for modern football. We urgently need a new stadium.

“We have always had a good relationship with Inter, so it makes sense to continue sharing the new stadium and split the costs of its construction and operation.”

Although designs will only be published in the first half of 2026 and a completion date has not been set, the purchase of the stadium is a crucial step as both clubs aim to return to past glories.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Serie A was the most prominent football league in the world. Its clubs spent the most money, bought the best players and attracted the attention of fans around the world.

But over the past 20 years, this section has been in steady decline. The performance of its clubs at European elite level has diminished, average stadium attendances have fallen dramatically, and even the most popular teams typically spend less each summer than lower- and mid-range Premier League sides.

The long-term decline can be traced by taking a glance at the results of Milan and Inter in the Champions League since it was renamed in 1992.

Although Inter have reached the final twice in recent years, they last won it in 2010 and Milan last in 2007, although only Real Madrid have won the competition more times in total than the Rossoneri.
