“What absolutely made a difference was that we were the most connected team — we were very together. The teamwork on that team was so special and it was amazing to be a part of it,” Wegman said.
“Finally, I would say that every coach – especially every female coach – is having fun, having fun. You can definitely make a difference.”
England’s success led to Wigman being named Women’s Coach of the Year at the 2025 Ballon d’Or Awards, while she also won the Women’s Coach of the Year award at the FIFA Best of the Year Awards for a record fifth time.
Trevor Pinter and Jenny Meadows shared the BBC Sports Personality Coach of the Year award for 2024 after leading Kelly Hodgkinson to an Olympic gold medal in the 800m at the Paris Games.
Sir Alex Ferguson won the Manager of the Year award in 1999, the year Manchester United won the treble.
Previous winners include Sir Clive Woodward, Colin Montgomery and Claudio Ranieri.
Wegman joins Arsene Wenger, Sir Dave Brailsford and Sir Gareth Southgate in winning the award more than once.
