Sarina Wegman has been crowned BBC Sports Personality Coach of the Year for the second time

Wegman replaced Phil Neville as England coach in September 2021, leading the Lionesses to their first major title at Euro 2022 when they beat Germany 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium.

England then reached the World Cup final in Australia in 2023, but lost 1-0 to Spain.

In this year’s European Championship, England showed amazing fighting abilities to remain in the tournament and became the only country in the history of the competition to have played three different matches to extra time.

By reaching the final, Wegman became the first women’s or men’s coach to reach five consecutive major international finals after leading the Netherlands to the 2017 European Championship and 2019 World Cup titles.

The Lionesses beat Spain 3-1 on penalties after the final ended 1-1 after extra time in Switzerland, with Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saving two shots from Spain in the shootout.

The victory means that Wegman has become the second coach after German Christina Theon to win three consecutive European Championships.

“What absolutely made a difference was that we were the most connected team — we were very together. The teamwork on that team was so special and it was amazing to be a part of it,” Wegman said.

“Finally, I would say that every coach – especially every female coach – is having fun, having fun. You can definitely make a difference.”

England’s success led to Wigman being named Women’s Coach of the Year at the 2025 Ballon d’Or Awards, while she also won the Women’s Coach of the Year award at the FIFA Best of the Year Awards for a record fifth time.

Trevor Pinter and Jenny Meadows shared the BBC Sports Personality Coach of the Year award for 2024 after leading Kelly Hodgkinson to an Olympic gold medal in the 800m at the Paris Games.

Sir Alex Ferguson won the Manager of the Year award in 1999, the year Manchester United won the treble.

Previous winners include Sir Clive Woodward, Colin Montgomery and Claudio Ranieri.

Wegman joins Arsene Wenger, Sir Dave Brailsford and Sir Gareth Southgate in winning the award more than once.
