Scotland 4-2 Denmark: ‘Sir Steve’, tears and the greatest night of our lives – what the fans said

From Scotland Rose’s electrifying display, through Scott McTominay’s overhead kick, Steve Clarke’s tactics, Lawrence Shankland’s scoring, Kieran Tierney’s screamer, Kenny McLean’s decisive strike from his own half, to the tears and emotional scenes of celebration, Scotland fans were waking up with the most joy of alcohol.

William: Those 90 minutes were the perfect antidote to 28 years of misery – last-minute concessions (Belgium 2001, Italy 2007), poor performances and a thundering mid-way shot against the Czechs in the European Championship. It scoops all that stuff into the most stunning 90 minutes I’ve seen in years. Don’t start me off with the anthem or I’ll start greeting again.

John: It feels so great to go to the World Cup as winners of our division. Steve Clarke is a master when it comes to getting the best out of players. It feels as good today as it did last night.

Ewan: Four amazing goals. I’ve never seen Scotland in a World Cup and I don’t really care how they do it. I’m so proud of the boys. McTominay’s goal will forever be in my mind, not to mention the others.

now: I still can’t believe it. Scotland doesn’t do this. They don’t record when they need to. It doesn’t matter two or three times. They don’t get lucky. They don’t score overhead kicks. Eight minutes of stoppage time is when the opponent lands a powerful punch. We don’t have the right to score those goals. I cry and laugh. It’s unbelievable. What a night.

Chris: It took three absolute screams, but we finally did it. There are no more glorious failures, but we are going to the World Cup. Finally, Shankland had a real chance and posed an even greater threat [Che] Adams W [Lyndon] Dykes – Needs to start for Scotland more as he has a host of goals.

Tom: What a result with three fantastic goals that deserves to win any game. Now we can dream of earning enough money to go to the Americas and be part of the Tartan Army again. I was in Spain ’82 and Italy ’90 and I would like to have one last “hello”.
