Star fly-half Finn Russell remains with the Scotland squad for Sunday’s test against Argentina at Murrayfield.

The 33-year-old was substituted in the final minutes of the 25-17 defeat to New Zealand on Saturday after knee and ankle problems, but is expected to take part in training on Tuesday.

An update from the Scotland camp made no mention of the Bath playmaker as Rory Sutherland, Aaron Reid and Murphy Walker have withdrawn.

Will Herd returns from Leicester after recovering from a shoulder injury that ruled him out of the opening two autumn tests, and Jimmy Bhatti has also been recalled from Glasgow.

Sutherland suffered concussion as a backup substitute against the All Blacks, while Wing-Reid suffered a quad injury.

Speaking after the disappointing loss to New Zealand, Townsend said of Russell: “His knee was the first injury, and I thought he was fantastic, despite having a knee strain.

“The reason we had to take him out was because he had a bad ankle [knock] Also, there were two injuries he was carrying.

He added: “He doesn’t think it will be serious, but it’s obviously too early to say.”

Zander Fagerson has not been deemed completely unfit for the New Zealand match, although Townsend said he hopes the Glasgow player can return from a lengthy layoff this month.

Scotland finished the series against Tonga on 23 November, having opened with a record 85-0 win over the United States.
