And they took control. Re-energized and ready, Weir was leading from the front.

Two assists were provided in the first half, when she did some gloating at goal, but after the break the midfielder started knocking on the door for a goal.

Coach Andreatta’s team fought hard twice to equalize the score at 2-2 in the first half, but Switzerland, the host country of the European Championship 2025 and which reached the quarter-finals, quickly regained its lead in the second half.

Weir, along with many of his teammates, had the opportunity to get them back to form again. No one was more desperate to do it than her.

With every shot that was bounced, deflected or blocked, the midfielder seemed to grow in anxiety. Those in the stands certainly did.

Until she was two goals behind and less than 15 minutes before the end of the match, she reached the net. Dream, come true. Or not.

Referee Abi Byrne was booed as she denied Ware and Dunfermline a fairytale moment following a handball in the build-up – and the Scottish star said after the match she thought it was “unlucky” but was told “that’s the rule”.

It seems unspoken that Weir was certain she would have her moment. And in extra time, it came.

PERFECT CHOICE BY MARTHA THOMAS Lauer presented the image she had envisioned from her early days in football – a scene and a shot on goal at East End Park.

“It was a fantastic moment for me to score in front of the Norrie McCathie Stand, this has been a dream of mine since I was really young,” an emotional Weir told BBC Scotland.

“I enjoyed every minute [of being here]. For me it was great and I think the girls enjoyed it too.

“My parents still live in Dunfermline and it’s still a big part of my life, so it really means a lot to be here.”

A few weeks ago, Ware was in a red dress in France, walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes. On Tuesday, she was describing her goal at Dunfermline while drenched in water, a moment that “ranks up there”.
