Tries from Euan Ashman and Kyle Steyn brought Scotland back into an entertaining contest.

Darcy Graham and Rory Hutchinson were held over the line in the first half when Cameron Roegaard and Will Jordan scored for the visitors.

“Teams get tired when they knock on the door,” said Townsend, who has now lost three home Tests against the All Blacks as head coach.

“I would like to play against New Zealand again next week. We are playing Argentina and we have to apply what we have learned.

“This is the first time this team has played together since the Six Nations. To get that cohesion straight away is tough and to see it grow during the game is encouraging.

“But it’s so disappointing because of the effort that we didn’t get the win.

“I think this is the closest we have come to winning. We dominated the second half, in terms of territory, pressure and skill. We haven’t done that against New Zealand in our history and we are better in terms of experience.”

“Our journey doesn’t stop today. We have a very big game next week and even bigger games to come in the Six Nations.”

Scotland captain Sione Tuipolo described the loss as “bittersweet” and stressed the importance of the win over Argentina, after opening the fall series with a record score against the United States.

“I told the players that we need a reaction at halftime,” he said. “We either lie down or choose to move forward.

“We had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

“We have to recover next week because Argentina is not going to make things easier.”
