It’s been a strange season for Stephen Robinson and St Mirren.
A glorious day at Hampden in December to win the Premier Sports Cup makes their league struggles almost irrelevant, but they host Dundee on Saturday in danger of sliding into a relegation battle.
They have managed just one win since that glorious triumph over Celtic, a narrow 1-0 win over Livingston on 20 December.
They are five points ahead of Kilmarnock, who are in the relegation zone, and fans should be grateful that the two teams below them are struggling.
After losing to 10-man Hearts earlier this month, Robinson accused his players of making him “look stupid”.
They had lost four games at that stage and the Northern Irishman was becoming increasingly frustrated with the performances and results achieved by a team devastated by injuries.
Since then, St Mirren have progressed to the last 16 of the Scottish Cup with a penalty shootout win over Livingston and then a draw against the same opposition in the league.
Robinson has had positive results from both matches and his side are well rested for this weekend’s decider after last weekend’s trip to Tannadice was postponed due to a flooded pitch.
He will also hope that January additions Jake Young, Alan Campbell and Keon Etete can make an impact as St Mirren try to move away from the battle at the bottom.
