Sean Penn receives an Oscar made from a damaged Ukrainian railway car after Zelensky’s meeting Sean Penn

Sean Penn received an Oscar made from the metal of a Ukrainian railway car destroyed by Russian missiles.

The statue, which is flat, silver and shaped like an Oscar, was given to him by Oleksandr Pertsovsky, the chief executive of Ukrainian Railways, who told him: “You miss the Oscars, so we made this statue.”

“It’s not golden but it’s very real and from the bottom of our hearts,” he added.

Ben (65 years old) replied: “These are all treasures, thank you.”

The actor missed Sunday evening’s ceremony in Los Angeles, where he won his third Oscar: Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which took home six awards, including Best Director and Best Picture.

There was no explanation for his absence that night, but it was revealed on Monday that the actor had flown to Ukraine late last week, where he was photographed in central Kiev on Monday “wearing sunglasses and carrying a pack of cigarettes.”

President Zelensky then posted a photo of them sitting together in his office. In 2022, Penn loaned one of his Oscars to the president, saying: “This is for you. It’s just a silly symbolic thing, but if I knew this was here with you, I’d feel better and stronger to fight.”

He added, “When you win, bring it back to Malibu. I’ll feel so much better knowing that a piece of me is here.”

Penn has visited the country frequently since the Russian invasion four years ago, and produced a documentary about its president in 2023. His previous two Oscars were for Mystic River in 2004 and Milk in 2009.

The actor also won a BAFTA for “Battle Against Another” last February, but he also missed the ceremony.
