Segway Myon electric bike review: Too smart?

Once turned on, riders can activate turn signals that illuminate the end of the handlebar, sound the horn when in traffic, ring a bell to warn others of their presence, and turn on the powerful headlights that, when in automatic mode, illuminate the road in low light.

It’s all good, but with more technology comes more that needs to be resolved – the right blinker never worked, despite loosening an allen bolt on the end of the handlebar and checking the turn signal harness plug for any damage to the bolts, which looked fine.

One additional safety feature, sold separately, is a rearview radar ($100) that attaches to the back of the built-in rack and detects cars in the bike’s blind spot. When a vehicle approaches within 230 feet of the bike, it sends audible, light, and on-screen alerts. There is a place in the app to adjust the radar sensitivity, but despite this, the radar does not light up every approaching car, so it is always necessary to ride with full awareness. Segway promises up to 97 percent accuracy.

Safety is paramount, but perhaps what makes a bike safer than any tool is a smooth, comfortable ride. With a weight of 72.75 pounds, a maximum torque of 85 Nm, and a 500-watt rear motor, the Myon is no rocket ship. But it’s not flimsy either. In fact, the bike feels suitably supported and not one that’s so boosted that it will launch you into the stratosphere, as many e-bikes seem powerful enough to do.

Another feature that makes the ride easier is the bike’s torque sensor, which can intuitively sense lean, delivering more power, and a torque filtering algorithm that matches the engine’s output to the rider’s input, eliminating intermittent, inconsistent and sometimes dangerous surges in power when shifting gears or starting from a stop light.
