Thai businessman Chansiri took over at Hillsborough in March 2015 and was aspiring to lead the club back to the Premier League for the first time since 2000.
They were beaten in the Championship play-off final by Hull City the following May, but that was the closest they came to ending their exile in the Premier League under his ownership, and they were relegated to League One in the 2020-21 season after being deducted six points for breaching spending rules.
Darren Moore led them to the second division in 2023 but left by mutual consent shortly afterwards, and Danny Ruhl then stabilized the club after a poor start to the 2023-24 season under Cesco Munoz.
During Chancery’s reign, there had previously been some issues with wage payments, but things really came to light when May’s wages were not paid on time, as happened previously in March.
At present, they are subject to five EFL bans and have not been paid wages on time in five of the past seven months.
Ruhl, now in charge of Rangers, left in July and his assistant Henrik Pedersen took charge of the club, which was unable to add to its small squad due to financial problems.
In addition to protests before and during matches this season, fans boycotted UEFA Cup matches with Leeds United and Grimsby Town, while a small number entered the field of play to temporarily stop a 5-0 home defeat to Coventry City, and then there was a mass boycott of the league match with Middlesbrough.
Chancery has been absent from the club throughout the turmoil.
