Fans protested ahead of their first game of the season at Leicester City, a game in which Bannan was sent off as the Owls eventually fell to a heavy 2-1 defeat.

The North Stand received safety certification in time for the first home match of the season against Stoke City the following week. Fan protests continued, with some holding a mock funeral for the club at nearby Hillsborough Park before the match, which the Owls lost 3-0.

The vast majority of fans boycotted the EFL Cup ties against Leeds United and Grimsby Town as they attempted to stop any additional money going to the club as part of protests to remove Chancery. Success on penalties, following a 1-1 draw against Leeds in the Premier League in the second round, was a rare moment of joy.

September then brought the high point of the league season with a deserved 2-0 win over Portsmouth but the club never got close to taking over.

Chancery’s reign ended on 24 October when the club was placed into administration and dropped 12 points by the Premier League.

Fans who had boycotted matches and the club store returned in droves the following day, following a 2-1 home defeat to Oxford United, and the club celebrated the end of Chancery’s tenure with a big-screen video before the match, while seats bearing his name in the condemned North Stand were briefly removed.

The influx of funds meant that the club’s directors, Begby-Traynor, were able to pay October wages early, and by 10 November, proof of the funds needed to purchase the club had been submitted by 10 interested parties.

The club received a six-point deduction on 1 December due to late payments of wages under Chancery and payments owed to His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

This left the Owls 27 points from safety but at least means the club should start next season in League One without the threat of further deductions.

Officials announced they had chosen the preferred presenter on 24 December, with BBC Sport reporting that former professional poker player James Board had been chosen.

The team last avoided defeat on December 29 when they drew 0-0 with fellow strugglers Blackburn Rovers.

Bannan’s 10-year spell with the club ended in January when he left for Millwall, while young striker Billy Cadamartiri was sold to Wrexham.

Officials announced at the beginning of this month that the club had enough money to continue operating until the end of the season.

With the relegation now confirmed, fans are hoping that positive news about the takeover will come soon.
