While Henderson is a notable omission, he is not the only big name missing from last year’s Six Nations squad.

Injuries to key players such as Porter, Henshaw and Bird are a major blow, while Peter O’Mahony, Cian Healy and Conor Murray have all retired.

Last year’s side’s international caps under interim coach Simon Easterby averaged 44.1.

This year, that number has dropped to 28.4 with Farrell’s return after his stint with the British and Irish Lions.

Regarding Henderson, Ferris added that there is “young blood bleeding in the wake” of the Ulster second row, but he believes the 33-year-old can play a role in the wider team with his experience.

Munster’s Edogbo will add an exciting presence to the attacking line, while Tom Ahern and Cian Prendergast are also exciting options.

“Is this a changing of the guard? Is this Andy Farrell wanting to bring in some youngsters?” Ferris said.

“Maybe they are among the players he would like to call up for the next World Cup.”

Farrell said Ireland knew they had to “start fast” in Paris on February 5.

“The squad has grown over the past 18 months, with 12 players making their international debuts last year alone, and I know how keen this group is to make their mark for Ireland,” he said.
