The Glasgow outfit could face the Scarlets duo if Hawkins and James can overcome the challenge of Thomas and Ospreys midfielder Owen Watkin.

James, 23 and 6ft 3in tall, showed signs of promise with the ball in hand against France.

“He picked up an injury during the off-season and since returning to the Scarlets he has been very physical in carrying and defending,” said Hawkins, who also featured with James in the Wales Under-20s.

“He brought that to the Six Nations and he’s a top guy. When you have guys like that in the team, you just want to get them on the ball as much as possible.”

After 15 tries and 102 points in the first two rounds, it is clear that Wales have a lot of work to do in defence.

However, Hawkins’ playmaking abilities are key to asking more questions on offense.

“We talk a lot about us being a team that can excite the nation,” said the centre, who played at fly-half for the Scarlets in the first half of the season.

“A lot of the best teams in the world believe in their style of play and will not change. France doubles that and is one of the best teams in the world.

“After some disappointing results, this is not the time to move away from what has worked, or move on, we just need to keep beating the drum.”
