Ireland enter this year’s tournament after a disappointing 2025 in which they conceded the Six Nations title to France and suffered a mixed autumn with defeats to New Zealand and South Africa and victories over Japan and Australia.

Farrell – who did not coach Ireland in last year’s Six Nations due to commitments with the British and Irish Lions – urged his side to learn from the November tests.

“A different kind of season for us. There are no excuses, it’s just a matter of making sure we learn from how we continue to develop as a team.

“Obviously the game is changing as well, moving with the times and sorting out some things like our discipline.

“People get caught up in how well the ball is kicked at this moment in time, but I still think there’s room for some good rugby along the way too.”

Farrell led Ireland to a Grand Slam in 2023 and another title in 2024, and while interim coach Simon Easterby claimed the Triple Crown last year, the head coach has his sights set on taking back the top spot from France.

“It’s about growing as a group and learning from the experience, but at the same time we like to win,” the 50-year-old said.

“This is very important but we will see where we are after the first game.”
