He had three different second row sets and three different back rows. Some of this has been forced due to injury.

His first three places were split 5-3 before it turned 6-2 against France, a day on which Rory Darge, the impressive winger, ended up playing in the midfield alongside inspirational captain Sione Tuipulotu.

So what now? Ireland were thrashed by France, sneaked home to Italy, were too strong against England, and then struggled to win against Wales.

They have problems with their team, among other things, but they have home advantage and an impressive win rate against Scotland.
