Naturally, Ireland would not have been in a position to win silverware on Saturday had it not been for the performances of Farrell’s veteran Test animals and his host of emerging talent.

Over the past 12 months, Farrell has answered many questions about an aging squad in need of fresh blood.

But to the coach’s credit, he has begun to address this issue. Many of the 35 players used by Farrell in the five matches point to the future.

Jimmy Osborne, 24, started all five matches at full-back and had an impressive tournament while in place of Keenan.

Farrell also handed debuts to Edwin Edogbo (23) and Nathan Doak (24), while 24-year-old Darragh Murray staked his claim for a future second-row regular with his Six Nations debut.

But the Irish Championship may have been decided by the players seizing their long-awaited opportunity.

Tommy O’Brien has scored three tries in as many matches. Nick Timoney, 30, made a big impression.

Rob Baloucoune, who added impressive pace to Ireland’s backline, finished the breakout tournament with three tries and a Rising Player award.

Tom O’Toole has been reborn with his former tight end.

Then there’s Stuart McCloskey. Having spent much of his Test career at the bottom of the pecking order, his breakthrough performance in midfield has been a delight.

The perennial Ulsterman led Ireland in carries (74), clearances (eight), assists attempted (six), defenders beaten (20) and post-contact meters (105).

“We saw another amazing finish from him today,” Farrell said on Saturday of Baloconi, who has not played for Ireland since 2022, ahead of the Italy match.

“Like Stu [McCloskey]”It’s hard to break through and get to the next level and be consistently good at that level when it’s new to you, and his confidence has grown tremendously.”

Many of Farrell’s most trusted lieutenants have also stepped into the field. James Ryan was excellent before injury ruled him out of the Scotland game, while Tadhg Byrne and Josh van der Flier looked rejuvenated.

Captain Cailan Doris led by example against Scotland as he comfortably produced his best performance since returning from shoulder surgery last year.
