Six Nations 2026: Wales exclude Sam Costello from trip to Ireland

Wales attacking coach Matt Sherratt praised Costello on his return and believes there is competition for the No. 10 shirt.

“There is a real struggle going on with the dozens right now,” Sherratt said.

“Dan was starting in the autumn and started the Six Nations. Sam has coached home and deserved that start.

“It is now up to the two remaining for this week to battle it out to start the weekend.”

Sherratt says he was impressed by Edwards’ reaction after being left out of the Scotland match.

“He was great and I had a good long chat with Dan after the first round of matches [against England]“Sherat said.

“If you look at all the 10s – again, it’s probably all the interest in the Six Nations – and the likes of Finn Smith and Marcus Smith, they rarely break 10 throughout the campaign.

“Dan has played seven games on the bounce for Wales, which is a good turnaround for a young player.

He added: “There will be some rest and rotation because part of the big picture leading up to the 2027 World Cup is developing the depth of the team.”

Edwards has been used primarily at the starting spot by Wales, while Evans has been used as a substitute designed to make an impression off the bench.

“I don’t think this is something we’ve talked about extensively,” Sherratt said.

“We feel sometimes with Jarrod, when the game is broken down, he comes in and there is clarity as to how to finish the game.

“He finishes games brilliantly, Japan being the most obvious, but I’m thinking about the last Six Nations as well.

He added: “He participated at the end of the Scotland match in particular, driving the attack.

“So there’s a bit of that with Jarrod, he’s a very good impact player, he can cover two positions, but all three players are in the mix to start when they’re fit.”
