Genji converted another penalty kick from Zander Fagerson two minutes into the second half. George Ford clipped it for 24-13.

Scotland’s front row was backed up once again. Another penalty and Murrayfield sat down much less comfortably.

When Ford dropped back into the pocket to score in the 53rd minute, it looked like the drip scoreboard pressure was about to grow.

But Ford, who 15 months ago missed a late goal to beat the All Blacks, did not give himself enough space.

Matt Fagerson, coming off the bench, was very quick. Go, try, England’s grand slam dreams in the dust and the Scots dance in the stands.

The English bomb team came, but it didn’t really explode. Scotland stopped them and finished comfortably.

Borthwick said that the goal scored by Ford was influential in the result, but it was not the only reason for England’s defeat.

“This is a team that has faced a lot of opponents over a long period of time,” he said of his team.

“It’s 24-13, you get that goal, 24-16 and with 24 minutes remaining, that’s a different complexion.

“Obviously that 10-point swing was a big point in the game, but there were a lot of other little moments in the game that added to that score.”
