Scotland face losing their Six Nations campaign after suffering a frustrating opening loss to Italy in a rain-soaked Rome.

Having come back from a 12-point deficit to surprise the Scots in 2024, the Italians this time lead by 12 points.

The deficit was down to three by full time but Scotland could not do enough as the home side made the most of their fast start, superior set-pieces and solid discipline.

Italy scored from the first attack when Lewis Lynagh slid in to finish off a brilliant kick from Juan Ignacio Brix.

The Scottish defense was exposed again soon after, as Tom Jordan was beaten in by a high ball and Tommaso Minoncello raced down the left flank to score easily.

Amidst heavy rain, Jack Dempsey slotted home from close range to reduce the deficit.

But Paolo Garbisi converted a penalty kick after a stunning miss in front of the goalposts to give Italy an eight-point advantage at half-time.

With players flying across the wet surface and the number of fouls rising, Finn Russell and Garbisie exchanged penalties before Scotland substitute hooker George Turner was sent to the bin to clear the rash.

Conditions were almost farcical, with the ball often twisting through the fingers and set-pieces a mess, with Scotland having the lion’s share of blunders.

Then, almost out of nowhere, substitute half George Horne slid across the turf into the corner, although Russell was unable to add the extras.

Going into a three-point game in the final 10 minutes, Italy held their nerve and did the simple things better to secure a deserved win.

More to follow.
