Wainwright’s family were in the stands when he made his international debut in Wales’ historic 13-12 win over South Africa in Bloemfontein – the only time the men’s national team has won a match against the Springboks on home soil.
The prop from Prestatyn, then with Saracens after getting a move from Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC), helped win a penalty scrum that set up field position for Josh Adams’ late try which was converted by Gareth Anscombe.
Wainwright was able to celebrate with his father, who was instrumental in his rise to Test level.
“He had a huge impact,” the prop said. “We were best friends and he did everything for me.
“He was one of my biggest support networks and when he was called up I thought about him a lot, it was very emotional.
“We would talk about everything and he would watch every match. When I was at Scarlets he would tell me what to watch after every match.
“He was unbelievable to me and that’s why getting that call was a little emotional for me. He would have been 1,000% proud of me.”
Sean, a former rugby league player and builder, ensured that Sam was able to give the RGC his full attention.
“I told him I wanted to follow his path and play rugby alongside him, but he would never let me,” said Wainwright, who earned a chance with Saracens in 2019.
“He said: ‘I’m doing this, not you – you’re just focusing on the rugby.’ “I was working part-time at the RGC and getting paid, but my father told me to eat and sleep rugby.”
