Six Nations: The Grail will be withdrawn from ceremonial use and replaced after the Fire is moved

The Six Nations Trophy is due to be “retired from ceremonial use” and replaced after being damaged by fire in an accident during transport.

A statement said that the cup was damaged after the third round of the tournament, when the car carrying it was involved in an accident, external On the Six Nations website.

“Fortunately no passengers were injured, but the cup sustained fire damage and, following assessment by the official cup manufacturer, unfortunately cannot be restored to its full display level.

“In line with these display standards, respecting the significance of winning the Six Nations Championship – one of the sport’s most prestigious honors – and to preserve the integrity and heritage of the trophy, it will be withdrawn from ceremonial use.”

The trophy, which is 75cm tall and made of silver, was created in 2015 to reflect the tournament’s evolution to six teams after Italy joined the tournament in 2000.

France, the current holders, are favorites to retain their title after winning the opening three matches of this year’s tournament.

The statement continued: “While this incident is extremely unfortunate, the situation adds another chapter to the history of the cup, which represents one of the most famous sporting tournaments in the world, with its roots dating back to 1883.”

“A new trophy will be commissioned with the same design as the original, with materials from the original incorporated into the new trophy, ensuring its history is respectfully transferred to the new creation.”

She added that the new trophy, which will take about 365 hours to make, will be “revealed before the 2027 tournament.”
