photo BurnleyFootballer’s Marcus Edwards has gone viral after the 27-year-old was seen wearing invisible leg pads during a Premier League match against him. West Ham.
This mirrors a similar situation from last year when a photo of 17-year-old Brighton midfielder Harry Howell celebrating with teammate James Milner also attracted attention after fans noticed the obvious difference in the size of their leg pads.
Howell’s “tiny” pair were a marked contrast to Milner’s traditionally sized guards.
So, what’s behind the trend of extra-small shin guards, and why are they used instead of regular sized pairs?
The simple answer is that players can choose the size of shin pads they want to wear.
The International Football Association Board (Ifab), which is responsible for the laws of the game, says shin pads are a mandatory piece of equipment that players must wear while playing.
Law 4.2 states that leg pads must:
-
To be made of suitable material
-
It must be of an appropriate size to provide reasonable protection and must be covered with socks
-
Players are responsible for the size and fit of their own leg pads
The law does not specify what size leg pad is “proper,” but leaves that decision up to each individual player.
Shin pads provide vital protection for players to prevent serious injuries.
There has been a growing trend among young footballers, as well as some big stars, wearing small shin guards during matches.
This may be to provide more comfort and allow players to move more easily.
Evab told BBC Sport that referees are only required to ensure they wear some form of shin guards.
IFAB said players – or parents or guardians of young players – should take responsibility for their safety on the pitch.
While shin pad size is ultimately an individual choice, any decisions relating to player safety will also be made in consultation with their club and medical staff.
