A cabin in the woods with words on it

When the days are shorter and colder, Something in the air prompts us to seek comfort in music. Our writers chose their favorite songs of the season. Hopefully they will provide some comfort listening in the final weeks of fall.

Amanda Petrusic recommends:

  • “Husbands” by Geese. Currently my favorite track on what could be my favorite record of 2025. Cameron Winter’s voice is phenomenal (wild, wild, weird, gorgeous), but I really like the jerky beat here. When the vocals layer at the end? I’m toast!
  • “Loser” by Tami Impala. This catchy and catchy song is one of the best and strangest songs from the artist’s fifth album.

  • “The Way Love Goes” by Wednesday. This haunting tune was inspired by Merle Haggard’s song of almost the same name; Both are tender meditations on how fragile we are in the face of love. Singer Carly Hartzman described it – exactly in my opinion – as “stabbing the road with a stick. Made it shiver.”

Hua Hsu recommends the following:

  • “Sour Diesel” by “They’re Tearing Up a Body of Water.” Like a hardcore band lazing around in covers of My Bloody Valentine; I had no idea I’d been waiting my whole life to hear someone make music like this.
  • “Hypersoft Lovejinx Junkdream” by James K. Until NewJeans, the hugely popular K-pop group, is liberated from the purgatory of their record labels, I’m happy to embrace myself in the dreamy, lightweight dance-pop of James K.

  • “Me and Those Dreamy Eyes (Live at the Jazz Café, London)” by D’Angelo. An early live gem from one of the best people to ever do it. An irresistible sacred sight.

Brady Brickner Wood recommends:

  • “Jan” by Hovde. The Austin duo’s sepia-tinged indie rock is the perfect soundtrack to a quiet, nostalgia-filled fall.
  • “Special” by Dexter in the newsstand. One of the year’s best songs feels timeless and fresh, a patient and yearning ode to young love from one of London’s most promising young pop singers.

  • “Buzzkill” by Nice Lalonde. If the song had a broken heart! “Buzzkill” is a feral cry for help; I can’t stop listening to it.

Rachel Sim recommends:

  • “Mercury” by Kathleen Edwards. I always seem to come back to “Failer,” Edwards’ 2003 album, around this time of year, because it has just the right amount of sombre tone to go with the cold air. This song, about getting stoned in the parking lot of my old high school, sounds like leather jacket season to me.
  • “Blues Run the Game” by Jackson C. Frank. The earlier it gets dark, the more I play this song. A classic seasonal affective disorder anthem.

  • “Guess Who I Saw Today” by Samara Joy. This cover of a jazz standard moves slowly and sweetly like honey. It’s perfect for strolling through the leafy streets.
