Chelsea manager Sonia Bombastor walked back her comments, saying the WSL title was “probably over” while insisting her team would “never give up”.
The Blues, who won six consecutive Premier League titles and were unbeaten domestically in Bombastor’s first season, are nine points behind leaders Manchester City.
Chelsea travel to Manchester City on Sunday (14:30 GMT), knowing that anything other than a win will end their title hopes.
Bombastor admitted doubts after their 2-0 loss to Arsenal last Saturday, while City held their nerve to secure a late win over London City Lionesses.
This is not the first time a Chelsea manager has publicly admitted losing the title before the end of the season when his predecessor Emma Hayes did so following a 4-3 loss to Liverpool in May 2024.
This result meant that with three games remaining, Chelsea were six points behind, but they usurped Manchester City on goal difference on the final day.
Asked if these were mind games from Bombastor, she said: “No, our mentality is to fight until the end, no matter what happens. We will never give up.”
“There are nine games left in the Premier League. The only thing is that we are not in control of them. Manchester City are top of the table and in control.
“We just need to make sure we focus on how we want to perform and give ourselves a better chance of winning. Every game is a must-win game for Chelsea. We will never give up.”
